Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, is set to resign his position in the coming days as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election ahead of 2027.
Gatekeepers News reports that the development was disclosed by his special adviser on strategic communications and media relations, Tunji Bolaji, who said Adelabu has already informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his intention to step down.
According to the statement, the President has given his approval and blessing for Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition.
Bolaji noted that the minister delayed his resignation to address critical challenges in the power sector and ensure continuity in ongoing reforms. These include efforts to stabilise electricity supply amid recent drops in power generation caused by gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding debts to gas suppliers.
During his meeting with the President, Adelabu presented his scorecard and highlighted key policy frameworks, including the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), and a Medium- to Long-Term Integrated Resource Plan aimed at ensuring sustainability in the sector.
President Tinubu commended the minister for his efforts and achievements, particularly for laying a strong policy foundation for the transformation of Nigeria’s power sector.
Adelabu also expressed appreciation to the President for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to national development.
He was appointed Minister of Power on August 16, 2023, and assumed office on August 21, 2023, after the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council. Before his appointment, Adelabu served as a deputy governor of operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
