Opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections in a bid to strengthen their chances against the ruling party.

Gatekeepers News reports that the resolution was reached during a national opposition summit held in Ibadan, where leaders from various parties met to strategise ahead of the polls.

Speaking at the gathering, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed that the parties had resolved to unite and support one consensus candidate for the presidential race.

He explained that the move is aimed at consolidating opposition strength and avoiding a repeat of past elections where divided votes weakened their chances. The parties also pledged to collaborate across political lines to “rescue the nation” and address pressing national challenges.

The leaders expressed concern over what they described as growing dominance by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning against any drift toward a one-party system.

Political analysts say the decision reflects increasing pressure on opposition groups to form a united front, as fragmentation has previously worked in favour of the ruling party.
