A faction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki is set to screen former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 election. The screening exercise is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to the faction, Jonathan will appear before a 14-member screening committee that includes former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, ex-Plateau governor Jonah Jang, and former foreign affairs minister Tom Ikimi. Other members include Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, and Tony Aziegbemi.
The development comes amid growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to presidential politics. The PDP faction recently confirmed that the former president completed the party’s fresh digital membership registration exercise directed by INEC.
The party also announced plans to screen 112 governorship aspirants, 198 senatorial hopefuls, 748 House of Representatives aspirants, and over 2,100 state assembly contenders nationwide as part of preparations for the 2027 general election.
Although Jonathan has yet to officially declare his intention to contest, supporters and political allies have continued to mount pressure on him to join the race.
Earlier this year, Turaki said the former president remained an active PDP member and had pledged support for the party ahead of future elections.
