Family members, colleagues and sympathisers on Friday gathered in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, to bid farewell to Joel Adesiyan, the teacher killed during last week’s deadly attack on schools in Oriire LGA.

Gatekeepers News reports that the burial service was held at Ayegun Baptist Church amid emotional scenes and tributes from mourners.

Adesiyan, who was the assistant headmaster of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, was shot dead when gunmen stormed communities along the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis on motorcycles.

During the attack, dozens of students and seven teachers were abducted from Community High School, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage after another abducted teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed in captivity days later. A disturbing video linked to the killing circulated online, prompting the victim’s family to appeal to the public to stop sharing the footage because of its emotional impact on relatives and the deceased’s children.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven teachers were kidnapped during the raid, while security agencies continue rescue efforts for the remaining victims.

Authorities also dismissed reports claiming the abducted teachers and students had regained freedom, insisting no official release had taken place.
