Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branches at Sokoto State University ASUU and Shehu Shagari University of Education ASUU have commended Sokoto State Government for approving the implementation of a 40 per cent increase in Consolidated Academic Allowances (CATA) for academic staff of the state’s two universities.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement jointly signed by Bello Musa, Chairperson of ASUU-SSU, and Shamsudeen Kabir, Chairperson of ASUU-SSUES, on Monday, June 1, 2026, the union described the approval by the administration of Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto as a major milestone for higher education in the state, noting that Sokoto has become the first state in Nigeria’s North-West region to implement aspects of the December 2025 ASUU–Federal Government agreement.
ASUU also praised the government for approving the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) covering two academic sessions and for constituting the Governing Council of Shehu Shagari University of Education.
The union said the measures reflect the Governor’s commitment to strengthening tertiary education and improving the welfare of academic staff across the state’s institutions.
Despite expressing appreciation, ASUU urged the government to address other pending issues affecting its members. These include outstanding deductions for cooperative and union check-off dues, promotion arrears spanning seven academic sessions, and unpaid arrears of the 25/35 per cent salary adjustment covering 14 months from January 2024 to February 2025.
