United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Dr Richard Montgomery.
Gatekeepers News reports that the appointment was announced on Monday by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
“Mr Peter Vowles has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in succession to Dr Richard Montgomery CMG.
“Mr Vowles will take up his appointment during September 2026,” the statement said.
Vowles is currently serving as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023.
The appointment reflects the UK’s continued diplomatic engagement with Nigeria, one of its key partners in Africa.
A career diplomat with more than two decades of experience in international development and foreign affairs, Vowles has held several senior positions within the FCDO and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID).
Before his current posting in Zimbabwe, he served as FCDO Transformation Director between 2022 and 2023 and as British Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.
He was also Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at DFID from 2018 to 2021, and previously served as DFID Country Director in Kenya between 2016 and 2018.
His extensive international experience includes roles in the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, where he worked on governance, health, development and international partnerships.
According to the FCDO, Vowles joined DFID in 2006 after working as a Health and Development Consultant with Mott MacDonald.
His earlier career included positions with the World Bank in Bangladesh, Raleigh International and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, where he worked as a teacher between 1992 and 1993.
Vowles is expected to assume his new role as British High Commissioner to Nigeria in September 2026.
