Ogun State Police Command has arrested six suspected criminals and recovered firearms, ammunition, generators and mobile phones during a series of intelligence-led operations across Abeokuta, Wasimi and Ibafo communities in the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to the police, the coordinated operations were carried out by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit and the Ibafo Division.
The suspects were identified as Afisu Awesu, Bala Aminu, Moruf Sodiq, also known as “Okiki,” Mumuni Amodu, popularly called “Stone,” Abayomi John, alias “Ibafo,” and Adeboye Ojesina.
Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the operations disrupted criminal networks allegedly involved in illegal possession of firearms, theft, conspiracy and receiving stolen property.
Items recovered from the suspects included a pump-action rifle, a locally fabricated pistol, two live cartridges, one expended cartridge, five generators and nine Android phones suspected to have been stolen.
Investigators said one of the suspects was linked to a generator theft syndicate operating in Abeokuta. His arrest reportedly led to the recovery of four Elepaq generators, one Sumec Fireman generator and several mobile phones, while another suspect was accused of providing transportation and logistics support to the group.
In a separate operation, SWAT operatives arrested a 58-year-old suspect for allegedly possessing firearms and using them to intimidate residents in Wasimi and surrounding communities. Police said a search of his premises led to the recovery of the weapons and ammunition.
The suspect reportedly claimed he found the pistol and later tested it, while alleging that the pump-action rifle was handed to him by another individual currently being tracked by investigators.
The police also uncovered a vehicle-parts theft network in Ibafo, where a suspect was arrested while allegedly attempting to steal a forklift engine component. Further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect accused of receiving stolen property.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the operations and reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and the protection of lives and property across the state. The suspects are expected to be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
