No fewer than five people lost their lives while eight others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the accident occurred on Friday around the Satguru Maharaj Ji Village axis of the highway and involved 10 vehicles, including six trucks, two Toyota Hilux vans and two cars.
According to emergency responders, the crash was triggered when a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into another truck parked along the road, setting off a chain collision. The impact also sparked a fire outbreak that complicated rescue operations.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed that five bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while eight injured victims were rescued and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for treatment at a nearby hospital.
Akinwande said firefighters and FRSC personnel responded swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles and property. He attributed the crash to brake failure and urged motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles.
The incident caused severe traffic congestion along the busy expressway, leaving many commuters stranded for hours as rescue and recovery efforts continued. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
