Okpebholo Seeks Establishment Of Special Court For Kidnapping – Cultism Cases In Edo

Governor Monday Okpebholo has asked the Chief Judge of Edo State, Daniel Okungbowa, to establish a special court to handle kidnapping and cultism-related cases in a bid to accelerate the prosecution of suspects and strengthen the fight against violent crime.

Gatekeepers News reports that the request was conveyed in a memo dated June 19 and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor. According to the state government, the proposed special court is intended to ensure the speedy hearing and determination of cases involving kidnapping and cultism across Edo State.

The move comes amid growing concerns over insecurity and follows the Governor’s pledge to intensify efforts against criminal activities. Okpebholo has repeatedly stressed the need for swift justice to deter offenders and improve public safety.

In the memo addressed to the Chief Judge, the government requested the nomination of three judges, or any number considered appropriate, to preside over the special court. Officials said the arrangement would help reduce delays in the judicial process and ensure quicker resolution of criminal cases.

The proposal is part of broader measures being implemented by the Edo State Government to tackle kidnapping, cult-related violence and other security challenges. Security agencies have recently stepped up operations across the state, leading to several arrests and prosecutions.

If approved, the special court is expected to play a key role in the state’s efforts to strengthen law enforcement, enhance the administration of justice and curb violent crime.
