The Netherlands boosted their hopes of progressing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden in Houston, while Germany secured a place in the Round of 32 after fighting back to beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sweden entered the Group F clash on the back of a 5-1 win over Tunisia and needed another victory to guarantee qualification. However, the Dutch took control of the match early, with Brian Brobbey scoring twice in the opening 17 minutes. Cody Gakpo added two goals in the second half before Crysencio Summerville completed the scoring. Anthony Elanga netted Sweden’s only goal.
The result moved the Netherlands to four points in Group F after their opening 2-2 draw against Japan, leaving them in a favourable position ahead of their final group match.
In Group E, Germany recovered from an early setback to defeat Côte d’Ivoire and become one of the first teams to qualify for the Round of 32. Franck Kessie gave the Ivorians the lead, but substitute Deniz Undav scored twice in the second half, including a late winner, to complete the comeback.
The victory handed Germany six points from two matches and confirmed their progression from the group stage. Côte d’Ivoire remain in contention and will seek a positive result against Curaçao in their final group fixture.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann had warned before the match that Côte d’Ivoire would provide a stern test, and the African side lived up to that billing. Despite their strong display, Germany’s quality and persistence proved decisive as they maintained their perfect start to the tournament.
