The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist in a case captured in a viral video showing money being collected through a Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminal inside a police station.
Gatekeepers News reports that the affected officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were attached to the ‘C’ Division in Asaba.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said the incident occurred in January 2026 and that disciplinary action followed the conclusion of an orderly room trial, whose findings were upheld by the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi.
According to Edafe, the officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct in violation of the Police Act, 2020.
“The officers were found guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020 (LFN),” the statement said.
Following the ruling, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable.
“The Commissioner of Police consequently upheld their punishment of reduction in rank, with Inspector Augustine Jeremiah reduced to Sergeant and Corporal Miracle Ehirim reduced to Constable.”
The command said the police commissioner reiterated the zero-tolerance policy of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, which strictly prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and other police formations.
It also stressed that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, warning that any officer found engaging in such conduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The commissioner urged officers and personnel of the command to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens, adding that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to discipline, accountability and restoring public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
The Delta State Police Command also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
