President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, marking his return to the global gathering after being absent from the last two editions.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this on Wednesday after a meeting with the President at the State House. He said Tinubu had confirmed his attendance and approved Nigeria’s participation plans for the annual assembly.
According to Ibrahim, the President is expected to participate in several high-level side events focusing on energy, education and hospital management, while using the platform to showcase his administration’s economic reforms and engage with global leaders on issues affecting Nigeria and Africa.
He added that Tinubu would also seek international support for a regional border policing initiative aimed at tackling insecurity and the challenges posed by porous borders in West Africa. Ibrahim noted that discussions were also underway for a possible meeting between Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the assembly.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open on September 8, while the high-level general debate will hold from September 22 to 28, bringing together heads of state and government from across the world to discuss global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, peace and security.
