Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected the new chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Gatekeepers News reports that Faye emerged as the new leader of the 15-member regional bloc during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday.
Faye succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who had chaired the organisation since June 2025 after taking over from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
His election comes at a crucial time for ECOWAS as the regional body continues to address security challenges, terrorism, political instability and efforts to rebuild ties with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, following their withdrawal from the bloc.
