Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), have foiled an attempted abduction of students by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, in Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the attack occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, when the terrorists reportedly gained access to the school with the assistance of suspected collaborators. According to the military, the FGGC premises are currently serving as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno.
In a statement, Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, said troops responded swiftly after receiving the alert, engaging the attackers with support from the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force. The coordinated operation forced the terrorists to abandon their mission and flee without abducting any student.
The military confirmed that 46 students were rescued and evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they underwent medical assessment and were declared stable. However, some students lost their lives after being hit by stray bullets allegedly fired by the fleeing terrorists during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities have yet to clarify whether the deceased were students of the Federal Government Girls College or the Federal Polytechnic.
Operation Hadin Kai expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest suspected collaborators, while security operatives continue to pursue the fleeing terrorists.
The military also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and critical public institutions across the North-East in collaboration with the Borno State Government.
