Alfred Kasunmu, a former attorney-general of Lagos State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has died.
Gatekeepers News reports that Kasunmu died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, according to a statement issued by his family.
Describing him as a distinguished scholar, mentor and patriarch, the family said his legacy of wisdom, integrity and service would continue to inspire generations.
“Professor Kasunmu was not only a cherished patriarch of our family but also a distinguished scholar, mentor, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria whose legacy of wisdom, integrity, and service will continue to inspire generations,” the family said.
The family added that Kasunmu touched countless lives through his dedication to law, education and humanity.
It said funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.
According to the family, visitors will be received on Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, between 1pm and 7pm.
The family also appealed for prayers during the mourning period, saying it took solace in the remarkable life Kasunmu lived.
Kasunmu was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964 and joined the faculty of law at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, the same year as one of its pioneer lecturers.
In 1971, he joined the University of Lagos as a senior lecturer and was appointed professor of law in 1973. He also served as dean of the university’s Faculty of Law from 1973 to 1975.
Kasunmu served as attorney-general of Lagos State between 1975 and 1978 before returning to private legal practice, where he established Prof. A.B. Kasunmu Chambers.
He was also a prolific legal scholar. In 1966, he co-authored Nigerian Family Law with Jeswald W. Salacuse and later edited The Supreme Court of Nigeria, 1956–1970, published by Heinemann Educational Books.
