The campaign organisation of Mohammed Adamu, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Gatekeepers News reports that the campaign organisation was reacting to comments by Aliyu Bello, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa, who had questioned the platform on which Adamu would contest the election.
In a statement issued on Friday, Otaru Douglas, director of media and strategic communications for the campaign organisation, described Bello’s position as “false, laughable and born out of panic.”
Douglas said Adamu had secured a political platform through his membership of the SDP.
Background
Adamu resigned his membership of the APC in May after losing the party’s governorship primary in Nasarawa.
In his resignation letter, submitted at his Gayam Ward in Lafia, the state capital, the former police chief accused the party leadership of compromising its internal processes.
He said the APC governorship primary fell short of democratic standards and did not reflect the wishes of party members at the grassroots.
Reacting to the APC chairman’s comments, Douglas said Adamu’s decision to leave the party was a strategic move.
“Adamu’s defection from the APC, following the charade called a primary election, was a strategic move to a credible and people-orientated platform, the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” the statement reads.
He expressed confidence that Adamu would emerge victorious in the 2027 election.
“The IGP is contesting the 2027 governorship election, and, by the grace of God and the will of the people of Nasarawa state, he will win convincingly.”
Douglas also criticised Bello over his handling of the APC governorship primary, alleging that the exercise had been condemned by party members and stakeholders across the state’s 13 local government areas.
“The governorship primary he supervised as state chairman has been widely condemned by party members and stakeholders across the 13 LGAs as lacking transparency, fairness, and internal democracy,” he said.
He accused the APC chairman of resorting to personal attacks against Adamu and urged him to focus on the affairs of his party.
“We are therefore calling on Dr Aliyu Bello to stay in his political lane and face his party’s dwindling fortunes,” Douglas said.
The campaign spokesman said Adamu’s political agenda remained focused on transparent governance, improved security and development.
He added that the former IGP’s decision to contest under the SDP would not be affected by criticism from political opponents.
“No amount of intimidation and media blackmail would alter Adamu’s ambition,” Douglas said.
He warned that further attempts to “disparage, defame, and malign” Adamu would attract “firm, proportionate, and decisive political responses.”
