The United States House of Representatives has voted for the third time to end the war in Iran, approving a war powers resolution that would restrict President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action without congressional approval.
Gatekeepers News reports that the resolution passed 220-204 in Tuesday’s vote, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in support. The latest vote marks the third attempt by lawmakers to use their war powers to halt the US military campaign in Iran, following similar votes in June and July.
The measure would require the president to end the military action unless Congress gives specific approval for its continuation. However, its passage in the House does not immediately end the conflict, as the resolution would still need to pass through the Senate before it could take effect.
The Senate had previously approved a similar war powers resolution, but Republican senators reversed their position the following day after Trump criticised them during a closed-door lunch, according to TheCable. The Senate has also yet to act on the House’s July resolution.
The latest House vote comes weeks before the November midterm elections, in which control of Congress will be contested. The war in Iran has become an issue in the campaign, with Democrats seeking to use opposition to the military action to challenge Republican control of Congress.
Trump had previously pledged not to involve the United States in foreign wars during his second-term campaign. He has nevertheless defended the military campaign in Iran, arguing that the conflict has degraded the country’s military capabilities.
