Their Excellencies, Chief Joshua Chibi Dariye and Sen. Simon Bako Lalong – former Governors of Plateau State – has one thing in common. During their separate days in office as Governors, every ethnic group on the Plateau was given a sense of belonging. These leaders were compassionate and tolerant. They developed thick skins against insults, negative criticisms, and other forms of vilification. For instance, Lalong was insulted and attacked at an IDP camp in Jos. He was there to visit and reassure victims of his support for them. Dariye was illegally ousted via Impeachment and later reinstated by the courts. Yet, never did I remember hearing any of them ridicule or insult their subjects in order to justify acts of impunity.
Today, social media is agog with videos and comments attributed to the incumbent Governor of Plateau State – H.E Caleb Mutfwang for publicly referring to employed staff of tertiary institutions and their “would be” students as “dolaye” ( English: fools or unintelligent). This unethical behaviour was made by Gov. Mutfwang in an attempt to justify their second sacking after less than two weeks of reinstatement, following a court order.
It should appear to the Governor that he is gradually losing popularity as a result of perceived vendetta – like actions and inactions, based on politics. The Governor must really appreciate the magnanimity of the APC who, despite controlling the legislature by over 92%, still cooperates with him in the interest of the State. He is expected to be a father to all.
Furthermore, it is worthy of note that people learn on the job. This is regardless of the class of degree. The world has recorded successful investors, businessmen, and other outstanding talents who did not have a degree. Even first-class holders that venture into academics learn teaching and other academic roles “on the job.” Therefore, there is no justification for sacking all the people who were sacked. In fact, it is an affront to the rule of law and democracy. As a lawyer, the Governor should (kindly) reverse these unwanted precedents, especially if he was ill-advised by haters of good things and sycophants.
In conclusion, we must try to remember that occupying a political office is synonymous with being a tenant. It is either 4+0 or 4+4 years.
May Plateau State Succeed!!
