Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned federal government that it will begin industrial action if its demands on funding for universities and staff welfare remain unresolved within the next two weeks.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a communiqué released after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna criticised the government’s repeated neglect of commitments made to the union.
The union said that should the government fail to respond positively, it would first embark on a two-week warning strike, which would then escalate into a total and indefinite action.
ASUU lamented the state of public universities, citing over 16 years of unfulfilled agreements despite multiple rallies and engagements, including those held across campuses in August.
It outlined seven unresolved issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding for tertiary institutions, payment of outstanding 25–35 percent salary arrears, and addressing delayed staff promotions.
The union also highlighted the need to resolve the victimisation of members in some universities and settle matters related to third-party deductions.
ASUU said the government has the capacity to resolve these long-standing issues, stressing that its intervention is critical to prevent a collapse of the public university system.
