The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking to impose a 10-year passport ban on Nigerians convicted of crimes in foreign countries, as part of efforts to restore the nation’s global image.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the bill, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), proposes amendments to the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, introducing stiffer sanctions aimed at deterring criminal activities by Nigerians overseas and improving the credibility of the Nigerian passport.

Leading the debate on behalf of the sponsor, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi described the legislation as “imperative and compelling,” stressing that it would serve as a deterrent to those tarnishing the country’s international reputation.

“Innocent and patriotic Nigerians suffer harassment in airports, visa denials, and constant suspicion simply because of the actions of a few,” he said.
“The green passport, once a symbol of pride, is now widely disrespected. That is nothing less than a state of emergency.”

Under the proposed law, Nigerians convicted abroad would have their passports withdrawn for 10 years after completing their sentences.
Lawmakers say the measure is intended to both punish offenders and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to accountability in the global community.
