The Lagos State Assembly has met with residents of Makoko affected by recent demolitions, urging relevant ministries to pause all demolition activities in the area.
Gatekeepers News reports that the meeting, held on Monday and led by the Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, aimed to address issues arising from the demolition exercise in Makoko and Oworonshoki. Adams, who also chairs the House Committee on Makoko Demolition, directed all ministries and agencies involved to stop demolitions in Makoko, Oko-Afon, and Shogunro communities.
“State assembly members will visit the area to carry out on-the-spot assessments to confirm the specific setbacks being taken by the government,” Adams said.
He also announced that community leaders will be elected as members of a Taskforce Committee to oversee engagement between the government and residents.
Adams emphasised that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property, noting concerns about residents living under high-tension electricity lines.
The lawmakers expressed disapproval of Bayo Adefuye, Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, for distributing foodstuffs to displaced residents, stating that what was most needed at the time was shelter, not palliatives.
At the meeting, Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, reassured residents that the government has no plans to wipe off Makoko, and that demolition has been suspended.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has allocated $2 million for the development of Makoko. The community will remain because it is part of Lagos history,” Babatunde said.
He also promised that those affected by the demolition would be duly compensated.
Some community leaders stated they no longer want non-governmental organisations representing them, expressing willingness to dialogue directly with the government.
Officials explained that the demolitions were initially carried out for safety and urban renewal purposes, particularly targeting structures built within 100 metres of transmission lines crossing the lagoon.
