All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the two Kano State House of Assembly seats contested in the by-elections held on Saturday in Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Aliyu Nabil Daneji of the APC as winner of the Kano Municipal constituency seat after he polled 7,484 votes to defeat his closest rival, Shehu Ishaq Abdullahi of the Peoples Redemption Party, who scored 105 votes. Other parties trailed behind with insignificant figures.
In Ungogo constituency, the APC candidate, Aminu Sa’ad Sa’ad, emerged victorious with 8,975 votes, defeating Shua’ibu Hashimu of the Action Democratic Party, who secured 54 votes, while other contenders recorded marginal votes.
INEC’s returning officers announced the results after the completion of vote collation across the polling units, wards, and local government collation centres, and declared both APC candidates duly elected.
The commission said the elections were generally peaceful, with security agencies deployed across the constituencies to maintain law and order. However, voter turnout was low, a situation attributed to the ongoing Ramadan fast and the decision of major opposition parties, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Peoples Democratic Party, and African Democratic Congress, to boycott the exercise.
The by-elections were conducted to fill vacancies created by the deaths of the former lawmakers who represented the two constituencies at the Kano State House of Assembly.
INEC said it remains committed to conducting credible and transparent elections and commended security agencies, electoral officials, and stakeholders for their roles in ensuring the smooth conduct of the polls.
