Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has suspended the medical director of Euracare Hospital and two other doctors from practising, following the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Gatekeepers News reports that Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twins, died on January 7, 2026, after complications linked to preparatory medical procedures. The incident led to a legal notice from the family, alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct.

An investigative panel set up by the council reviewed documents, written submissions, and oral testimonies from 21 doctors connected to the case. At the end of its 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, the panel said it found a prima facie case of negligence in the management of the patient at Euracare and Atlantis Hospital.

As part of its interim measures, the council suspended Tunde Majekodunmi, medical director of Euracare; Titus Ogundare, the anaesthesiologist involved in the procedure; and Atinuke Uwajeg, chief medical officer of Atlantis Hospital. The three are prohibited from medical practice in Nigeria pending the outcome of proceedings before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

According to Enejo Abdu, secretary of the panel, evidence of professional misconduct was also established against 10 additional doctors affiliated with Atlantis Hospital. Those named include Adeseye Akinsete, Chidinma Ohagwu, Anthony Ajeh, Amarachi Bayo, Nkechi Peji, Olaoye Oludare, Agaja Oyinkansola, Patricia Akintan, Babatunde Bamgboye, and Raji Faidat.

Eight other doctors were cleared after the panel determined there was no sufficient evidence linking them to wrongdoing.

The council stressed that its findings remain preliminary. A full hearing before the disciplinary tribunal will determine whether the suspended doctors are guilty and what sanctions, if any, will follow.

Separately, a coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death is scheduled to begin on April 14, where further medical evidence and witness testimonies are expected to be examined.
