Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against the state’s Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
Gatekeepers News reports that during a plenary session on Thursday, March 5, 2026, lawmakers presented and read an impeachment notice signed by 38 members, saying the move complies with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows for the removal of a deputy governor in cases of serious misconduct.
The allegations detailed in the notice stem partly from Gwarzo’s earlier tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs (2023–2024) and include claims that he diverted public funds meant for local councils, collected kickbacks, and facilitated unlawful financial transactions.
According to lawmakers, while overseeing the state’s 44 local government councils, the deputy governor is accused of receiving millions of naira monthly under various pretexts, actions they argue constitute breach of public trust and abuse of office.
The notice was served on Gwarzo and he has been given a 14‑day period to respond to the charges. If he fails to address the allegations, the Assembly may request the state’s Chief Judge to constitute an investigative panel, which could lead to further steps toward his removal.
The development comes amid ongoing political tensions in Kano, where shifts in party loyalty and internal executive, legislature relations have drawn public attention.
