Supreme Court has fixed April 19, 2027, for further hearing in the legal dispute over the Kano emirate involving Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Gatekeepers News reports that the apex court made the decision on Monday after listening to preliminary arguments from parties in the case before adjourning proceedings.

Reacting to the development, Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi, the appellant in the suit, described the hearing date as too far away, noting that his legal team may apply to the court to bring it forward.

The dispute is rooted in the long-running Kano emirate crisis. In 2020, Sanusi was removed as emir by the administration of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

However, in May 2024, the Kano State government repealed the law that had earlier split the emirate into multiple jurisdictions and subsequently reinstated Sanusi as emir.

Following his reinstatement, legal actions were filed by supporters of Bayero to challenge the move, leading to conflicting court rulings. A federal high court initially intervened and ordered parties to maintain the status quo, but the court of appeal later ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

The case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court, where it is now expected to remain unresolved until at least 2027, prolonging uncertainty over the leadership of the Kano emirate.
