The Lagos State Government has introduced a new set of cybersecurity guidelines aimed at strengthening digital safety for businesses, public institutions, and residents across the state.

Gatekeepers Newreports that many individuals n a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the initiative as a key step in Lagos’ ambition to become a smart, secure, and globally competitive digital hub.

With thousands of businesses operating within the state, Lagos continues to face growing exposure to cyber threats. According to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria loses more than $500 million (about ₦250 billion) annually to cybercrime, highlighting the need for stronger and coordinated security measures.

Omotoso noted that Lagos’ rapid transformation into a smart city has increased its vulnerability to cyber risks. He explained that the newly released guidelines provide clear, practical, and scalable cybersecurity measures tailored for small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The framework aligns with key national regulations, including the Cybercrime Act, the Nigeria Data Protection Act, and the National Cybersecurity Policy and staguu and always aay wStrategy.

According to the government, the guidelines are not mandatory regulations but are designed to equip stakeholders with practical, context-specific tools to enhance cybersecurity practices.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure digital environment that encourages innovation, investment, and public trust.

“The guidelines further strengthen Lagos State’s leadership in advancing digital trust and building a resilient, future-ready digital economy,” the statement said.

The government also commended the Lagos State Cybersecurity Advisory Council, chaired by Fene Osakwe, for providing the technical expertise behind the framework.

It added that the initiative underscores Lagos State’s dedication to protecting digital assets, enhancing collaboration between the public and private sectors, and ensuring that organisations of all sizes can operate confidently in a secure digital environment.

“As the document highlights, a cybersecure Lagos is essential for sustaining its position as one of the most dynamic and globally competitive tech hubs of the 21st century,” the statement added.

The government further assured that the guidelines will continue to be updated to address emerging threats and evolving technologies, reinforcing cybersecurity as a core pillar of the state’s digital transformation.
