Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has elected Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti as its new President for the 2026–2028 term, following its national elections held on Saturday in Kano.

Gatekeepers News reports that in his acceptance speech, Prof. Omoti expressed gratitude to members of the association for the confidence reposed in him, describing his victory as a collective mandate for all Nigerian doctors.

“This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to every doctor across Nigeria who believes in a stronger, united, and more purposeful Nigerian Medical Association,” he said.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of medical practitioners across the country, noting that doctors continue to serve under challenging conditions in both urban and rural health facilities.

“You are the true heroes of this story. Your sacrifices, your sleepless nights, and your dedication in the face of uncertainty are the pillars upon which this victory stands,” he added.

The newly elected president called for unity among members, including his co-contestants, emphasizing that the election was a contest of ideas rather than a division of purpose.

“There is no ‘us’ or ‘them’—there is only one NMA, one voice, one mission. Let us move forward united,” he said.

Prof. Omoti outlined key priorities for his administration, including improving the welfare and dignity of doctors, strengthening engagement with government and stakeholders, promoting professional unity, and enhancing capacity development to ensure global competitiveness.

He also pledged to restore pride in the medical profession and ensure that the association speaks with courage, acts with integrity, and leads with purpose.

Addressing young doctors, Omoti assured them that their concerns would be given due attention, promising to create opportunities that would enable them to thrive within the country.

“To the young doctors, I see you, I hear you, and I stand with you. Your struggles will not be ignored,” he said.

He further extended a call to Nigerian doctors in the diaspora to remain engaged with the association, assuring them that their contributions would be valued.

Prof. Omoti concluded by urging members to see his emergence as the beginning of a transformation within the NMA, driven by unity, purpose, and courage.
