National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 63-year-old Chinese national, Ting Hung Kiong, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilogrammes of synthetic cannabis into Nigeria through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to the agency, the suspect, who reportedly holds Malaysian citizenship, was intercepted on May 17 after arriving in Lagos aboard an Emirates flight from Thailand through Dubai.

NDLEA operatives said two large travel boxes containing the substance known as “Canadian Loud,” a synthetic strain of cannabis, were recovered from her luggage.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that she works as a caregiver in Malaysia and that her daughter sponsored her trip to Thailand, where she stayed for two weeks before receiving the drug consignment for delivery in Nigeria.

In a separate operation, NDLEA also recovered over 1.8 million tablets of Tapentadol valued at about N2.19 billion at the Lagos airport import shed.

The shipment, which arrived from India via Emirates Cargo, was handed over to the agency by the Nigeria Customs Service after weeks of monitoring.

The anti-narcotics agency further announced several arrests and seizures across the country, including the interception of cocaine, tramadol and skunk cannabis in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Edo, Ekiti and Kano states.

NDLEA chairman, Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to sustain the crackdown on illicit drugs nationwide.
