Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man accused of staging and circulating a fake bandit attack video on social media in a bid to gain followers on TikTok.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to reports, the suspect was seen in a viral clip kneeling while being questioned by a man dressed in a police uniform. During the interrogation, he allegedly admitted that the video was fabricated to attract attention and increase his online following.
The suspect reportedly said the man featured in the video was a cattle rearer who grazed cows behind his shop. He claimed the herder initially refused to participate in the recording before later agreeing.
He also allegedly told investigators that he could neither read nor write, adding that his apprentice wrote the caption attached to the video uploaded online. The suspect further admitted to creating and posting two similar videos earlier in the week.
Police authorities recovered photographs and video materials linked to the fake publication during preliminary investigations.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Abeokuta for further investigation.
