Kannywood film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of actress Hausa actress Wasila Isma’il, who died at the age of 46 after battling a prolonged illness.
Gatekeepers News reports that the death was confirmed on Sunday by her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, who disclosed that the actress passed away at the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN) Hospital in Kaduna.
“Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihirrajiun. Wasila Isma’il is dead. She died at the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria Hospital, Kaduna,” Chiroma wrote in a social media post announcing her passing.
Wasila was widely regarded as one of the notable faces in the Hausa movie industry. She began her acting career in 1998 with the film Jinin Masoya before rising to prominence in 1999 after starring in the movie Wasila, directed by Yakubu Lere alongside actor Ali Nuhu. The success of the film later made “Wasila” her popular screen identity.
In an earlier interview, the actress revealed that the movie was initially titled Jamila before she requested a name change because she feared it could affect her personal image.
Beyond acting, Wasila also worked in radio and television broadcasting in Kaduna and remained a respected figure in Kannywood for decades. She is survived by her children.
