Tinubu Vows Tougher Action Against Terrorists – Bandits

President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration will not bow to pressure from terrorists, bandits, or other criminal groups, while promising stronger efforts to tackle insecurity and economic hardship across the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the assurance was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during the national inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

According to a statement issued by the SGF’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Tinubu remains focused on improving security, addressing economic challenges, and ensuring that the benefits of democracy reach more Nigerians.

Akume acknowledged the difficulties facing citizens, including rising economic pressures, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement in several parts of the country. He said the government is aware of the suffering and is taking steps to provide relief and strengthen security nationwide.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said.

The SGF further stated that securing the release of Nigerians held captive by criminal groups remains a top priority, adding that security agencies are receiving greater support and resources to confront emerging threats.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Akume noted that the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 demonstrate the resilience of its people and honour the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists during the June 12 struggle.

As political activities begin to gather pace ahead of the 2027 general elections, he urged Nigerians to reject violence, divisive rhetoric, and hate speech. He particularly cautioned young people against participating in political thuggery, misinformation campaigns, and acts of violence for personal gain.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” Akume said.

He also called on religious leaders, traditional institutions, civil society groups, the media, and families to continue promoting peace, unity, and tolerance, while commending the armed forces and other security agencies for their contributions to national security and democratic stability.
