House of Representatives has summoned the nation’s service chiefs and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before lawmakers and provide explanations on the worsening security situation across the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, representing the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, during plenary on Tuesday.

Presenting the motion, Gumi expressed concern over the escalating wave of insecurity in several parts of the country, particularly recurring attacks by bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements.

The lawmaker noted that despite ongoing military operations and various security interventions, incidents of killings, kidnappings and destruction of property have continued, leaving many communities vulnerable and forcing residents to flee their homes.

During deliberations, members of the House stressed the need for security agencies to provide a comprehensive briefing on the country’s security challenges and the measures being implemented to address them.

Following the debate, lawmakers resolved to invite the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff and the National Security Adviser to appear before the House and present detailed updates on efforts to tackle insecurity nationwide.

The House also underscored the importance of stronger coordination among security agencies and urged authorities to intensify operations aimed at protecting lives and property across the country.

Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including banditry, terrorism, kidnapping for ransom and communal conflicts in different regions.

The latest summons comes amid growing public concern over the increasing frequency of attacks and renewed calls by stakeholders for a review of the country’s security architecture.

There have also been calls on President Bola Tinubu to reshuffle the nation’s security leadership as part of efforts to strengthen the fight against insecurity.
