University of Lagos (UNILAG) has confirmed that water samples taken from a female hostel were contaminated following complaints from students who reported vomiting, diarrhoea and other health concerns.

Gatekeepers News reports that the development comes after days of anxiety on campus over allegations that water supplied to some halls of residence had been polluted.

In a statement issued on Friday, the university’s spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said preliminary laboratory tests confirmed contamination in water obtained from Moremi Hall, one of the institution’s female hostels. She added that testing of water samples from other halls of residence is still ongoing.

The university said immediate precautionary and remedial measures have been activated to protect students and staff. As part of the safety guidelines, members of the university community have been advised to use available water only for washing and sanitation purposes, while water intended for drinking, cooking or other domestic uses must be boiled until further notice.

UNILAG also directed anyone experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or related health issues to report to the university’s medical centre for assessment and treatment.

The institution noted that its location in a wetland area, combined with the ongoing rainy season, makes strict adherence to safety measures necessary.

The confirmation follows an earlier investigation launched by the university after students raised concerns about discoloured water and illness in some hostels.

The Students’ Union Government had previously disclosed that a borehole serving one hostel was identified as a possible source of the problem, prompting the suspension of water supply from the facility and the provision of alternative arrangements.

University management urged students, staff and parents to remain calm and rely only on official communication channels for verified updates while efforts continue to address the situation and restore normalcy on campus.
