A 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan (UI), identified as Tomisin, has reportedly been abducted while returning from a religious conference held in Imo State, sparking concern within the university community.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to the Students’ Union Government (SUG), the student was travelling back from the Scripture Union Students Fellowship national conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when she went missing alongside seven other travellers.

In a statement issued on Friday, SUG President Temidayo Adeboye said Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Students Fellowship and Vice-President of the organisation’s University of Ibadan chapter. He clarified that contrary to reports circulating on social media, only one UI student is currently unaccounted for in the incident.

The union said it had begun engaging relevant stakeholders, including religious bodies and security agencies, to establish the circumstances surrounding the abduction and support efforts aimed at securing the victim’s release. Adeboye urged students and members of the public to disregard claims that eight UI students were kidnapped, stressing that Tomisin is the only student of the institution involved in the case.

Reports indicate that the group was returning from the conference in a convoy that included the fellowship’s National General Director, Uwem Cosmos, when contact was lost during the journey. The abduction is believed to have occurred around the Imo-Anambra axis, although security authorities have yet to provide a detailed account of the incident.

University authorities have also confirmed awareness of the situation. Joke Akinpelu, the institution’s Director of Public Relations, said the university was informed after the incident occurred and reiterated that Tomisin was the only UI student abducted. She noted that the student had travelled without officially notifying the university.

The student’s disappearance reportedly became more alarming after she failed to sit for scheduled faculty examinations earlier in the week. As of the time of reporting, the Imo State Police Command had not released an official statement on the matter, while efforts to locate the abducted victims were ongoing.
