Former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, is set to deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Annual Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja Branch, with discussions expected to focus on governance reform, economic policy and institutional accountability.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Chairman of the Annual Law Week Planning Committee, Chukwudi Kachikwu Enebeli (SAN), disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Lagos.

According to Enebeli, Fashola will speak on the theme, “Law, Leadership and the Ballot: Governance Beyond Politics,” during the opening plenary of the Law Week, which is themed “Altering the Status Quo: Going Against the Norm.”

The event is scheduled to hold from June 19 to June 25 in Ikeja, Lagos.

Enebeli said Fashola’s keynote address will draw from his experience as a two-term governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works and Housing, with a focus on governance systems that prioritise performance, institutional continuity and sustainable development beyond political cycles.

He explained that the week-long programme is designed to stimulate critical discussions on Nigeria’s governance challenges and generate practical solutions to issues of institutional inefficiency, public accountability and national development.

A major highlight of the event will be the Business Forum themed “Accelerating the Future of the Nigerian Economy,” which will bring together policymakers, economists and business leaders to assess the country’s economic outlook.

Enebeli added that the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, is among the key speakers expected to address topics including trade policy, investment opportunities, industrial growth and economic competitiveness.

The Law Week will also feature a Young Lawyers’ Session titled “The Grind Before the Glory,” aimed at mentoring emerging legal practitioners on ethics, leadership and career development.

Another session, the Bar and Bench Forum, will examine the theme “What is Expected on the Other Side of the Coin.”

Participants will also attend the Alao Aka-Bashorun Memorial Lecture, themed “2027: Building a Nation Where No Man is Oppressed.”

Other activities lined up for the week include religious services, a health walk and the Chairman’s Dinner.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch, Adeniyi Quadri, described the Annual Law Week as an important platform for national dialogue at a time when demands for stronger institutions, transparency and improved governance outcomes are increasing.

He said the programme would culminate in actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing institutional performance and fostering stronger collaboration between the legal profession, government and society.

Quadri also noted that registration for all lecture sessions is free and open to members of the legal profession as well as other interested stakeholders.
