Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of the Oshodi Resettlement Market following an alleged attack on officials of Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) during an enforcement operation at the market.
Gatekeepers News reports that the action was announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who said traders obstructed and assaulted sanitation officers carrying out their duties.
According to the state government, the incident occurred when LAGESC operatives visited the market to enforce environmental regulations. Authorities said some traders resisted the exercise and allegedly attacked the officers, prompting the government to shut down the facility pending further action.
Wahab said the closure was necessary to restore order and ensure compliance with environmental laws. He warned that attacks on government officials would not be tolerated, stressing that enforcement teams must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities without intimidation or obstruction.
The Lagos government has in recent years intensified environmental sanitation enforcement across markets and other public spaces as part of efforts to improve cleanliness and public safety in the state.
Authorities noted that the market will remain shut until appropriate measures are taken and stakeholders engage with the government on compliance issues.
