The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly constructed accommodation blocks for personnel of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in Port Harcourt as part of efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of troops.
Gatekeepers News reports that speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, the Army Chief said providing decent, secure and conducive accommodation remains a key component of the Nigerian Army’s “Soldier First” culture, emphasising that personnel welfare is fundamental to operational effectiveness.
According to Shaibu, improved housing for soldiers and their families will boost morale, enhance operational readiness and strengthen administrative efficiency, enabling personnel to carry out their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.
He said a well-motivated and adequately cared-for soldier is better positioned to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and respond swiftly to emerging security threats.
The Army Chief added that sustained investment in troop welfare remains essential to building a professional, resilient and combat-ready Nigerian Army.
Shaibu also commended President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Army through the provision of resources aimed at improving personnel welfare and strengthening the military’s operational capacity.
According to him, the support has enhanced the Army’s ability to safeguard the country’s security while improving the well-being of its personnel.
The commissioning of the new accommodation forms part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of its personnel while sustaining operational excellence across the country.
