Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has expressed support for the economic reforms being implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the policies are beginning to deliver encouraging results reflected in key macroeconomic indicators.
Gatekeepers News reports that Emmanuel, a former banker, acknowledged that Nigeria continues to face significant economic challenges but said recent improvements in the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals provide reasons for optimism and should be supported by all Nigerians.
His position was conveyed by his Special Assistant on Media, Stephen Abia, while briefing journalists on preparations for the former governor’s 60th birthday.
According to Emmanuel, countries facing major national challenges require unity and collective support for the leadership to restore stability and normalcy.
“When nations face existential crisis, leaders are bound to rally around the incumbent leadership in a bid to rescue and restore normalcy. Our case in Nigeria shouldn’t be different as we confront our current challenges,” he said.
The former governor added that President Tinubu deserves the support of Nigerians, citing what he described as improvements in the country’s economic outlook.
“As a player in Nigeria’s economic and financial sector, there are some improvements in critical economic indicators. Mr. President deserves all our support,” he stated.
Speaking on Emmanuel’s decision to cancel plans for a public celebration of his 60th birthday, Abia said the former governor had initially accepted a proposal by friends to mark the occasion but later opted for a quiet and reflective observance.
He explained that Emmanuel, known for his private lifestyle, chose instead to spend the day in personal retreat, focusing on prayer, reflection and contemplation on leadership, responsibility and nation-building.
According to Abia, the former governor also considered it important to acknowledge what he described as the positive macroeconomic signals emerging from the Federal Government’s economic reforms.
“He stated that he could not ignore the positive macroeconomic indicators emerging from the bold and far-reaching economic reforms undertaken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Abia said.
Emmanuel expressed confidence that the improvements recorded in the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals would eventually translate into better living conditions for Nigerians and strengthen the nation’s overall economic wellbeing.
He further stressed that policies aimed at advancing the national interest should receive broad support, regardless of political affiliations.
The former governor also assured President Tinubu of his continued backing for reforms geared towards achieving sustainable economic growth, stability and long-term national prosperity.
