Nigerian troops have repelled coordinated attempts by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters to infiltrate parts of Maiduguri and the Buratai axis of Borno State in a series of overnight attacks.
Gatekeepers News reports that the operation prevented the insurgents from gaining access to the city after security forces intercepted their movement.
The attempted attacks reportedly occurred between 12:20 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Friday, with the terrorists launching simultaneous assaults on Muna Garage, Shuwari village and the Ajilari Cross area. Military sources said troops, acting on an effective early warning system, engaged the insurgents with heavy gunfire from multiple directions, forcing them to abandon the mission and flee.
Security forces also thwarted separate infiltration attempts at Miringa and Dutsen Kura in the Buratai area. During the pursuit of the fleeing terrorists at Miringa, a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle triggered an improvised explosive device (IED), but no soldier was injured in the incident.
Military authorities said clearance operations are ongoing across the affected communities to track down the fleeing insurgents, recover any abandoned equipment and prevent further threats.
They reaffirmed that Operation Hadin Kai will sustain offensive operations against terrorist groups and urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies.
