Fayemi celebrates Wole Soyinka At 92

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has congratulated Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a symbol of intellectual excellence, courage, and cultural pride whose contributions continue to inspire generations.

Gatekeepers Newreports that in a statement issued on Monday, Fayemi praised the renowned playwright and activist for his lifelong commitment to literature, democracy, human rights, and justice, saying his influence extends far beyond Nigeria and Africa.

The former governor, who also served as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), said he joined millions of admirers across the world in celebrating Soyinka’s remarkable legacy.

“Today, as Professor Wole Soyinka celebrates his 92nd birthday, I join millions of admirers in wishing this distinguished son of Africa a very happy birthday filled with joy, robust health, and continued fulfilment,” Fayemi said.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with the literary icon, Fayemi described Soyinka as a trusted mentor and steadfast ally whose friendship has been deeply enriching.

“Prof. Soyinka has been a consistent voice of conscience, a mentor, and a steadfast friend whose guidance and solidarity I have deeply valued,” he said.

“His commitment to truth, justice, and the defence of human dignity remains a shining light for our nation.”

Fayemi also highlighted Soyinka’s outstanding literary achievements and lifelong advocacy for democratic values, noting that his global acclaim was crowned with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, making him the first African to receive the honour.

He urged younger Nigerians and Africans to emulate Soyinka’s unwavering commitment to principle, integrity, and purposeful leadership.

Offering prayers for the playwright’s continued health and longevity, Fayemi expressed confidence that Soyinka’s wisdom and moral leadership would remain invaluable to Nigeria’s national discourse.
