Veteran journalist, public relations expert and former Chief Press Secretary to several Oyo State Governors, Oloye Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 76.
Gatekeepers News reports that Alabi, who also held the traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, reportedly passed away in Lagos on Saturday morning.
His death was announced in a statement by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko, who said the respected journalist would be buried on Sunday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Widely regarded as one of Oyo State’s most accomplished media personalities, Alabi built a distinguished career in journalism, public communication and public service. He served as press secretary to several former governors of the state and earned widespread respect for his contributions to governance, media practice and the promotion of Yoruba history and culture.
Reacting to the news, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described Alabi’s death as a great loss to Oyo State and Nigeria, praising his integrity, wisdom and dedication to public service. The governor said the late journalist’s contributions to journalism, cultural preservation and community leadership would remain enduring and prayed for strength for his family.
Also paying tribute, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, described Alabi as an accomplished journalist, distinguished public servant and revered traditional chief whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations. He extended condolences to the Alabi family, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, members of the Olubadan-in-Council and the media community.
