The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended the credibility of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, dismissing social media claims questioning their accuracy.
Gatekeepers News reports that the examination body said the results were produced through rigorous, transparent and quality-assured processes that have guided its operations for decades.
WAEC’s reaction followed what it described as a recent wave of public commentary, particularly from content creators and social media commentators, challenging the credibility of the released results.
In a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, the Council said it welcomed constructive scrutiny but urged the public to distinguish legitimate concerns from unverified claims.
“While the Council welcomes constructive scrutiny as part of its accountability to candidates, parents, schools, and the wider public, it wishes to state unequivocally that this year’s results were produced through the same rigorous, transparent, and quality-assured processes that have guided the Council’s operations for decades,” it said.
WAEC said the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates was conducted in line with its established standard operating procedures and relevant educational policies, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.
The Council acknowledged that anxiety over examination results was understandable, particularly among candidates preparing to advance to the next stage of their education.
However, it urged candidates, parents, schools and members of the public to exercise caution before accepting claims circulating on social media.
According to WAEC, every candidate’s script undergoes a multi-tiered system of marking, moderation and auditing. The process is guided by standardised marking schemes and overseen by vetted subject experts to promote objective and fair scoring.
The examination body also pointed to its established channels through which candidates and members of the public can raise concerns, seek clarification and submit queries regarding results.
“WAEC maintains clear procedures for addressing queries or grievances. Guidance on query resolutions is available via the Council’s offices nationwide and online channels for information dissemination; our website remains www.waecnigeria.org, http://www.waecnigeria.org, and our X and Facebook accounts remain @waecnigeria,” the Council stated.
WAEC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of its assessment processes and protecting the interests of candidates.
It advised anyone with concerns about the 2026 WASSCE results to contact the Council directly through its offices or verified communication channels instead of relying on unverified claims and speculation on social media.
