Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has ordered the dissolution of all ad hoc committees of the lower chamber following the expiration of the time allotted for them to complete their assignments and submit reports.
Gatekeepers News reports that the directive was contained in a circular signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, and took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.
According to the circular, the decision followed previous directives urging the committees to conclude their assignments and submit outstanding reports in line with the House rules and established procedures.
Only two ad hoc committees had sought and obtained extensions under Order 18, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders. However, the two-week extensions granted to them had also expired.
The House said ad hoc committees were established for specific and time-bound assignments and were not meant to continue indefinitely beyond the period approved for their mandates.
Abbas consequently directed that all activities being carried out under the dissolved committees should cease immediately.
Chairmen of the affected committees were also instructed to submit all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.
Among the committees affected are panels investigating the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, security intervention funds, power sector reforms, port concessions, drug trafficking and alleged mismanagement of oil spill clean-up funds in the Niger Delta.
The development effectively brings the activities of the House’s temporary investigative and special-purpose committees to an end.
