Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has approved the establishment of an advisory committee to examine controversies surrounding statements made by some Islamic scholars in the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the committee, according to a statement issued by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto, on Tuesday, was set up following concerns that the remarks had contributed to a breach of peace.
The committee is chaired by Yahaya na Malam Boyi, Sarkin Malamai, and includes representatives of Izala from Kaduna and Jos, Tijjaniyyah, Qadiriyyah, the Sultanate Council and Jama’atu Nasril Islam.
Other members include Muhammad Isah Mafara, Bello na Malam Boyi, Professor Mansur Ibrahim, mni, Professor Mansur Ibrahim Sa’id, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Malam Lawal Maidoki and Barrister Gandi Umar Muhammad, mni, who will serve as secretary.
The committee is expected to critically examine the position of Shari’ah on issues raised by Islamic scholar Malam Musa Lukuwa and advise the state government accordingly.
It has also been directed to submit its report to the government within 14 days.
The committee’s work is expected to provide guidance to the government on the religious issues at the centre of the controversy and contribute to efforts to maintain peace in the state.
