The Federal Government says it has no plans to increase electricity tariffs in the country.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during a media briefing marking his first 100 days in office, covering the period from June 8 to September 16.
Tegbe said he received several calls over the weekend following reports suggesting that the government was planning an upward review of electricity tariffs.
The minister dismissed the reports, describing them as politically motivated ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the administration remained focused on improving electricity supply across the country rather than increasing tariffs.
According to Tegbe, the government is pursuing renewable energy solutions and conducting a comprehensive audit of power infrastructure nationwide to identify critical gaps and address them.
The minister’s comments come amid ongoing concerns about the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the future of government support for the sector.
Tegbe said the power sector faces challenges across the entire value chain, noting that the interconnected nature of the problems means they cannot be resolved simply by increasing electricity generation.
He said the government’s approach would therefore focus on addressing the structural and infrastructure challenges affecting the sector while improving electricity supply to consumers.
