Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collected N1.2 trillion in revenue during the first half of 2026, representing a 7.1 percent increase compared with the N1.12 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Gatekeepers News reports that NERC disclosed this in its second-quarter (Q2) 2026 report, which showed that the 11 DisCos collected N603.64 billion from customers in Q2, out of N744.67 billion billed.

The collection translated to an 81.06 percent collection efficiency in Q2, compared with 78.95 percent in Q1, when the DisCos collected N597.56 billion from N756.93 billion billed.

According to the commission, the figures represented a 2.11 percentage-point improvement in collection efficiency between the first and second quarters of the year.

Benin DisCo recorded the highest collection efficiency in Q2 at 92.68 percent, followed by Ikeja at 92.20 percent and Eko at 89.39 percent. Port Harcourt, Abuja and Ibadan DisCos also recorded collection efficiencies above 80 percent.

Kano DisCo recorded the lowest collection efficiency at 47.74 percent.

NERC said seven DisCos — Enugu, Benin, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Ikeja — recorded improvements in collection efficiency between Q1 and Q2. Kano DisCo recorded the largest decline, dropping by 15.02 percentage points.

The latest figures come amid regulatory measures aimed at improving the financial performance and infrastructure of the electricity distribution companies. In September, NERC directed debt-free DisCos to remit 50 percent of their earned non-administrative operating expenditure to capital expenditure provision accounts from August, with the requirement scheduled to rise to 60 percent from February 2027.

The commission also reported that electricity subsidy obligations incurred by the Federal Government fell to N679.58 billion in H1 2026, from N1.05 trillion in the same period of 2025.
