D’Tigers have lost to Australia after 4th quarter capitulation.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nigeria have lost 84-65 to Australia in the opening game of Group B in the men’s basketball event at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
Although D’Tigers fought valiantly in the first three quarters, the Australians blew Nigerians apart in the final as the Boomers finished the game stronger.
Mike Brown’s starting five was led by Vincent Gabe Nnamdi, the team’s captain, followed by the formidable quartet of Josh Okogie, Miye Oni, Chikezie Okpala, and Precious Achiuwa
D’Tigers recovered from an initial 19-12 deficit to finish the first quarter 23 all.
The newly-crowned NBA champion, Jordan Nwora gave a brilliant three-pointer and Obi Emegano intensified the resurgence.
Errors by D’Tigers at free throws gave the Boomers an edge at the second quarter 43-40.
Although Nigerians began the third quarter on the backpedal, a series of brilliant defensive showings by Achiuwa limited the Australians.
D’Tigers poor offensive plays, however, made them lose the quarter 58-52.
Australia who entered the final quarter with great intent, established their dominance on the match as they netted 26 points to earn an 84-65 victory over D’Tigers.
Nigeria will hope for better performance on Wednesday, as they face Germany in the second group game.
