Some Nigerian athletes have been able to make the semis at the Tokyo Olympics.
Gatekeepers News reports that following the suspension of Blessing Okagbare at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, some Nigerian athletes have been able to put smiles on the faces of citizens back at home as they qualify for the semis in the competition.
Oluwatobi Amusan
Oluwatobi Amusan has qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 100m Hurdles at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics after winning Round 1 (Heat 3), running from lane four.
Amusan crossed the finish line at 12.72s ahead of Jamaica’s Thompson Yanique who timed 12.74s and Skrzyszowska Pia of Poland who ran a personal best of 12.75s to place third in the heat.
She will continue her quest for an Olympic medal on Sunday when she competes in heat 1 of women’s 100m Hurdles semifinals.
Enoch Adegoke and Usheoritse Itsekiri
Enoch Adegoke has qualified for the semi-finals in men’s 100m at the Tokyo Olympic Games as he emerged first in his heat after clocking a new personal best of 9.98seconds.
Adegoke beat Asian record holder, Femi Ogunode, and British star, Zharnel Hughes and 2021 World leader Travon Brommel to win his 100m heat to become the 11th Nigerian in history to go under 10 seconds.
Usheoritse Itsekiri on the other hand qualified for the semi-finals in a time of 10.15s for third in his Heat.
However, it wasn’t all good news for Team Nigeria as the country’s fastest man Divine Oduduru who has a personal best of 9.86 was disqualified after a false start in his 100m heat.
The semi-finals and finals will both take place on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan.
Adegoke and Itsekiri will be looking to become the next duo that will make the final of the event at the Olympics after Davidson Ezinwa and Olapade Adeniken in the 1990s.
