Microsoft Denies Closure Of Lagos Office - Confirms Layoffs
Microsoft’s African Development Center (ADC) in Lagos, Nigeria, has been in the news lately, with reports claiming that the company has shut down the centre.

Gatekeepers News reports that a Microsoft Spokesperson has clarified that the Lagos facility is still operational, despite the engineering team being let go.

The company has been undertaking workforce adjustments and organizational changes since 2023, as part of its efforts to align with global market conditions and meet customer needs.

Microsoft established its African Development Center in Lagos and Nairobi, Kenya, in 2019, with a focus on expanding its engineering talent pool, investing in Microsoft programs, and engaging with students and communities.

The company has been committed to hiring and training engineering talent in Nigeria and West Africa to develop Microsoft products that are used by over 1 billion devices, empowering millions of users and organizations globally.

However, despite operating for five years and employing at least 120 engineers and more than 200 total staff members, Microsoft has decided to part ways with the engineering team.

The company has emphasized its commitment to supporting affected employees, who are set to receive salary payments until June 2024 and will still be covered by health insurance.

As Microsoft lays off the engineering team, questions arise about the future of its African Development Center in Lagos.

Speculation is rife about whether Microsoft will shutter its operations in Nigeria or consider AI-driven alternatives.

However, indications point to the former, particularly in light of recent developments such as the closure of Microsoft’s gaming studios.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox announced plans to close several gaming studios, including the renowned Arkane Austin.
