Tinubu Addresses Nigerians Amid Widespread Protests

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, in response to violent protests across several states. In his broadcast, the President acknowledged the turmoil and expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and destruction of property.

The protests, which began peacefully, have turned violent in some areas, leading to fatalities in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states. President Tinubu condemned the destruction of public facilities and looting of businesses, emphasising that such actions hinder national progress.

While recognising the protesters’ desire for a better and more progressive Nigeria, the President called for an immediate suspension of further demonstrations to allow for dialogue. He warned that the government would not stand idly by while a few individuals with political agendas attempt to destabilise the nation.

In his address, President Tinubu outlined various economic and social initiatives his administration has implemented over the past 14 months. These include:

1. Removal of fuel subsidies and reform of foreign exchange systems
2. Increased government revenues and reduced debt service ratio
3. Major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
4. Boost in oil production and investments in the gas sector
5. Launch of a Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to reduce transportation costs
6. Implementation of student loan schemes and consumer credit programs
7. Introduction of various youth empowerment and job creation initiatives
8. Signing of a new National Minimum Wage law, increasing the lowest wage to N70,000 per month
9. Ambitious housing projects across the country
10. Measures to increase food production and reduce import tariffs on essential goods

The President urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to work together for a brighter future and not let violence tear the nation apart. He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing citizens’ concerns and building a more prosperous Nigeria.

As the situation remains tense, President Tinubu called on security operatives to maintain peace while respecting human rights. He appealed for unity and progress, stating, “FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER!”

The coming days will likely be crucial in determining whether the President’s address will help calm the unrest or if further measures will be necessary to address the protesters’ grievances.
